House tax arrears hovering around whopping `14 crore

MARGAO

Even as the Margao Municipal Council is struggling to arrange the monthly salaries for the staff and employees, the civic body’s house tax arrears is hovering around a whopping Rs 14 crore as of Tuesday.

Add to the figure the outstanding revenue on trade license and rent, the total outstanding arrears may cross a whopping Rs 15 crore.

Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes has said that the civic body has initiated measures to recover the huge house tax arrears.

“Our efforts to recover the arrears have not slowed down. The civic body has sent the bills to the households for the payments. Our officials have also started recovery of the outstanding tax by visiting the households,” he said.

The MMC, however, is eying on the business establishments operating from rented premises. Reason: While the annual trade license of any business establishment may work out to Rs 1,200, the civic body collects revenue, one month’s rent, besides the trade license from the establishments, which work out a sizeable amount.
